“We must work and even suffer for peace, filled with a heart of love for both Israelis and Palestinians.”
Call to Action: U.S. Response to the Kairos Palestine Document
In January 2012, clergy, theologians and activists from across the U.S. gathered to write Kairos USA’s foundational document, “Call to Action.” The preamble continues: “As U.S. Christians we bear responsibility for failing to say ‘Enough!’ when our nation’s ally, the State of Israel, violates international law.”
A response to the 2009 “Moment of Truth” Palestine Kairos document, “Call to Action” links Christians in the U.S. to the churches of Palestine and to the global network united with the Palestinian people in the work of “resistance with love as its logic.”
The past decade has seen momentous progress for the church movement for Palestine in the U.S. Every mainline Protestant denomination and peace church in the U.S. has adopted a policy of divestment from companies implicated in Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians.
Some have directly embraced the call of Palestinian civil society for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. Several denominations have declared Israel an apartheid regime and others are proposing similar declarations. Christian Zionism is being challenged as inconsistent with Christian faith and church practice.
